^ THINKING ABOUT MATHEMATICS ^

Mathematics Consultant Michael Richards provides consultancy services to Primary and Secondary schools. Three key areas of Michael's expertise are Mathematics Curriculum Development, Thinking Skills, and Assessment in Mathematics. His work with teachers often relates to these areas.

* Mathematics Curriculum Development

      Michael works closely with teacher teams to implement mathematics programs that suit each school's context. He believes that teachers must "own" the programs that they will implement. Student input is also utilised to develop mathematics programs that are authentic.

      Programs are developed using Curriculum Standards as the framework to enhance the mathematics being taught, while improving the competency and engagement of students.

* Infusing Thinking into mathematics teaching and learning

Using on-going assessment to improve mathematics teaching, integrating metacognitive or Thinking tools and processes, and linked curriculum planning are key frames for this work.

Think-Pair-Share, Thinking prompts, and graphic organisers are examples of the Thinking tools and processes that can be readily implemented to improve mathematics learning.

* Practical classroom strategies linking maths and assessment

Options include progression points, rich tasks, projects, problem solving tasks, rubrics and portfolios used as assessment for, as, and of learning, interdisciplinary programs/projects; mathematics journals, and other ways of  students thinking, writing, talking and drawing about mathematics.
